Starting home care is a big decision. Knowing what happens next can make it feel much easier.
1. A first conversation
It usually starts with a phone call. You explain the situation, and the provider asks some questions to understand the person's needs and whether they can help.
2. An assessment
Next comes a more detailed assessment, often at home. It covers the help needed, health conditions, medicines, mobility, risks around the home, and, just as importantly, the person's routines, likes and dislikes.
3. The care plan
The provider writes a care plan describing exactly what support will be given, when, and how the person likes things done. You should be involved, and the plan should be reviewed regularly and whenever needs change.
4. The first visits
Ask who will be visiting and how the provider keeps the carer team consistent. Early visits are a time to get to know each other, so don't hesitate to say if something isn't working.
Questions worth asking any provider
- Are you registered with the Care Quality Commission (CQC), and what is your rating?
- How do you recruit and train carers?
- Who do I call if a carer is late or I have a concern?
- How will I be kept informed?
- What are your charges, and what notice do I need to give to change or stop care?
